Discalced Nuns of the Order of Our Lady of Mt Carmel (OCD)

The Discalced Carmelite Nuns is a Religious Institute of Women who trace their origins back to fifteenth century Europe.

The Discalced Carmelite community established a presence in Tasmanian in 1948 when the Launceston Carmel was founded at Longford Tasmania. At the request of Archbishop Guilford Young, the community moved in 1975 to the present monastery built in West Launceston. The Discalced Carmelite community has devoted themselves to prayer and sacrifice, for the sake of the Church and the world, supported by life in the community.

The congregation is led by Prioress Mother Teresa Benedicta of the Cross.
