Evangelisation
The Process of Evangelisation
Evangelisation is the process of sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with people, telling them about the wonderful gift of new life offered by Jesus Christ through his resurrection from the dead, and overcoming the power of death itself. Jesus said that he came to bring life so what we might have it abundantly (John 10:10).
An essential element of this Good News – or Gospel – is the call to repentance from sin. This involves turning away from harmful and sinful ways of living, then turning towards Jesus Christ, and learning to walk in his ways. Ultimately it involves entering into a loving relationship with Jesus and his Church, which begins with faith and baptism, and leads to full sacramental initiation in the Church.
Pope Paul VI wrote, “Evangelising is in fact the grace and vocation proper to the Church, her deepest identity. She exists in order to evangelise, that is to say, in order to preach and teach, to be the channel of the gift of grace, to reconcile sinners with God, and to perpetuate Christ’s sacrifice in the Mass, which is the memorial of His death and glorious resurrection” (Evangelii nuntiandi, 16).
