Sacramental Preparation

The policy for sacramental initiation of children in the Archdiocese of Hobart follows the order of sacraments for the initiation of adults through the RCIA process: Baptism, Confirmation, and first Holy Communion (Eucharist). The sacrament of Reconciliation is usually administered prior to Confirmation and Eucharist.

As parents are the primary educators of their children, preparation for the Sacraments of Initiation is centred in the family. Parishes provide opportunities for families to present their children for the Sacraments of Initiation.

Preparation is parish-based in the midst of the faith community, which has the privilege and responsibility of initiation new members and handing on the faith to the next generation. Parishes have established sacramental teams to assist the parish priest in guiding the initiation process. Schools and others involved in catechetical instruction provide support for the initiation process.

Parents who are seeking to have their children prepared for the sacraments should contact their local Catholic Parish and arrange to speak with the Parish Priest.

Parents can find further information about the sacraments in the brochures below.
