Warm welcome awaits as Alpha shares the Good News

The Alpha program has enriched parish life and contributed positively to the wider Church community, according to Kings Meadows Parish Administrator Fr Damien Sladen.

“Over three programs, we have witnessed encouraging growth in both participation and engagement, fostering deeper faith, meaningful fellowship, and a renewed sense of belonging within the parish community,” Fr Damien said.

The 10-week Alpha course is a series of interactive sessions about life, Christian faith, church and friendship in a welcoming, open and informal environment. Sessions include a shared meal, a presentation or video, and small group discussion.

It started more than 30 years ago and is aimed at those wanting to know more about Christianity, people returning to the faith after some years, or those curious about the big questions of life.

“Alpha has been warmly embraced by parishioners of St Peter’s at Youngtown as well as neighbouring parishes,” Fr Damien said.

He highlighted the spirit of welcome, conversation, and faith-sharing that Alpha fostered.

“Over the past year, St Peter’s Parish, Youngtown, has successfully conducted three Alpha programs, offering participants a welcoming opportunity to explore and deepen their Christian faith,” Fr Damien said.

“These programs have become an important part of the parish’s evangelisation efforts, creating a space where people can gather, share their experiences, ask questions and encounter Christ in a supportive and friendly environment.

The diversity of participants, from the church and wider community, was a strength of the program that “created a rich environment of shared experiences and mutual encouragement”, Fr Damien said. Warmth, joy, and fellowship were the hallmarks of these gatherings.

“Participants have ranged from practising Catholics seeking spiritual renewal to those who had little or no recent connection with the church,” he said.

“The welcoming and non-judgemental atmosphere has allowed people to explore faith without pressure, fostering genuine conversations and friendships.

“Shared meals, group discussions, prayer moments and social interactions all contributed to building a strong sense of community among participants.”

The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive.

“Alpha helped me rediscover my faith in a way I had never experienced before. The discussions were open and welcoming, and I felt comfortable asking questions that I had carried for many years,” one participant said.

Another commented: “The Alpha programme gave me a deeper understanding of prayer and my relationship with God. It renewed my enthusiasm for living my faith every day.”

With continued prayer, planning, and support, Fr Damien said St Peter’s Parish hopes to expand this ministry and continue sharing the Good News with others.

“As we conclude this latest Alpha program, we give thanks to God for the many blessings received and for the faith journeys that have begun or been renewed,” he said.

“We look forward with confidence and hope to future opportunities to share Christ’s love through Alpha and other evangelisation initiatives within our parish and beyond.”
