Living tapestry of faith, friendship and creativity

The craft group of St Peter’s Catholic Church at Youngtown is flourishing as a vibrant expression of community life, creativity and companionship within the parish.

What began as a gathering of like-minded individuals has blossomed into a joyful circle where faith is gently stitched together with artistry and humour.

The group, under the enthusiastic leadership of Jenny Broad, hosted a four-day workshop and exhibition of crafts at St Peter’s Church Hall over the King’s Birthday long weekend from 5 to 8 June.

With 19 participants and exhibitors from around the state, the hall was transformed into a lively tapestry of colour, creativity and cheerful chatter. From intricate needlework to imaginative craft pieces, every table told a story.

The success of this event was thanks to the thoughtful organisation of Mrs Broad, working closely with Geraldine Byrne, founder of the St Peter’s Angels (craft group at St Peter’s Church).

Mrs Byrne’s vision laid the foundation for what has grown into a cherished ministry, where skills are shared, friendships are formed, and laughter is never in short supply.

“The workshop sessions have been a particular highlight,” Mrs Byrne said.

“Participants eagerly exchanged tips and techniques, though not without a few amusing moments—like the occasional tangled thread that seemed determined to test both patience and faith, or the glue that stuck faster to fingers than to the intended craft item.

“One participant jokingly remarked that by the end of the day, she had created ‘one masterpiece and three experiments’.”

The delicious catering was also a highlight for participants.

“The atmosphere throughout the four days has been one of gentle busyness and warm camaraderie,” Mrs Byrne added. “Conversations flowed freely, often accompanied by bursts of laughter, especially when someone realised they had been carefully following a pattern … upside down.

“More than just an exhibition, this event reflects the heart of St Peter’s parish life: a community that gathers not only to create but to connect. Each crafted piece, each shared meal and each moment of laughter contributes to a larger picture –a living tapestry of faith, friendship and fellowship.

“As the craft group continues to grow, it stands as a gentle reminder that even in the simplest of activities, grace can be found. Through creativity, hospitality and a delightful sense of humour, the craft group of St Peter’s has shown that when people come together, the results are truly something special—beautifully crafted, warmly shared, and always just a little sweet.”

Kings Meadows Parish administrator Fr Damien Sladen praised the craft group as a “creative and prayerful initiative that may inspire other parishes to explore new expressions of faith”.

“This exhibition demonstrated how craft can become a medium of prayer, incorporating moments of silence, reflection, and meditation, while also celebrating the uniqueness and creativity of each individual,” Fr Sladen said.

“Throughout the [event], Mr James Byrne (acolyte) and I were present to lead grace before meals and offer short spiritual reflections.”
