Tasmanian basketball royalty Scott Roth has officially opened brand new sporting facilities at Sacred Heart College.

The New Town based College was delighted to have the Tasmanian JackJumpers Head Coach open its brand new $2.4 million multipurpose facility on 2 March.

The facility includes a full-sized and competition ready court which can be used for basketball and netball, markings for four-square and pickleball, along with an undercover structure for use in all-weather conditions.

“These new courts represent a significant investment in student participation, wellbeing and school life, further strengthening Sacred Heart College’s commitment to providing exceptional facilities and opportunities for its students and community,” Principal Elizabeth McDougall said.

“This is an investment not just in sport, but in the overall experience of our students, ensuring they can remain active, engaged and connected all year round.”

While the facilities have a variety of sporting and recreational uses, there is a major focus on basketball and among the special features are the four basketball keys. These keys are the areas extending from the baseline to the free-throw line, allowing for a defined position during free-throws and greater safety for players.

“Scott Roth has played an extraordinary role in shaping modern Tasmanian basketball. Having him officially open our new courts is incredibly special for our students and wider College community,” Mrs McDougall said.

“He is widely recognised for leading the club to NBL success and elevating Tasmania’s presence on the national basketball stage. His involvement highlights the significance of this exciting development for Sacred Heart College.”

In a fun twist, after the official launch students had the opportunity to take part in a shoot-out with players from the Hobart Chargers, putting the new courts to the test alongside some of Tasmania’s top basketball talent.

As well as providing students with access to high quality spaces for training, skill development and competition; the new indoor facility also supports a variety of other opportunities.

“Designed with versatility in mind, the space also serves as a functional and multipurpose venue for classes, assemblies and playtime activities,” Mrs McDougall said.
