Young Tasmanians called to ‘Take courage’ ahead of WYD 2027

Preparation has officially begun for the World Youth Day 2027 pilgrimage to Seoul, South Korea, with the Office of Youth Evangelisation hosting a launch night on Friday 13 February. Around 20 young people gathered to learn more about the pilgrimage and to celebrate the Korean Church.
Young Tasmanians were invited to reflect on and respond to the 2027 World Youth Day theme, “Take courage! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

Darcy Rogers, Director of the Office of Youth Evangelisation, said the theme is particularly relevant for young people today, reminding them to place their trust in Christ.
“A lot of things are failing young people today,” he said. “Many are consumed with fear for their future and a diminishing sense of self-worth. World Youth Day brings hope. A young Church gathered is a light in the darkness.”
Preparation for the pilgrimage will take place over the next 18 months through a formation program designed to immerse Tasmanian pilgrims in the story of the Church in South Korea, encouraging reflection on the faithful witness of the Korean martyrs. Formation will be complemented by social gatherings, fostering both spiritual depth and a strong sense of community among participants.

Max Hodge attended World Youth Day in 2023 as a non-believer. In the months that followed, he joined an RCIA course and was baptised at the Easter Vigil in 2024. He shared his testimony at the launch night.
“World Youth Day was the foundation of my faith,” he said, recalling how moved he was to see millions of young Catholics gathered in one place. “With all these people, you can hear their experiences with the Lord and let them help shape your faith.”

Max admitted he felt nervous before travelling overseas for the first time but encouraged others not to let fear hold them back.
“It’s okay to be afraid, but if you can push past that barrier and go, you will not regret it,” he said. “You will come home with a new outlook on life, a stronger relationship with God, and memories to last a lifetime.”
The night fostered excitement among participants, with Cathedral parishioner SP Doodeman saying he was most looking forward to meeting new people and praying together as one.
“World Youth Day 2027 is an opportunity to spend time with other young Catholics from around the globe and to pray for the world,” he said. “It’s a chance to really bring Christ to the nations.”

Young people who were unable to attend the launch are encouraged to stay connected through the Office of Youth Evangelisation’s Facebook page and by attending upcoming events listed in the 2026 Combined Youth Calendar.
“World Youth Day could be the answer to your prayers,” Darcy added. “I have heard countless testimonies of people meeting Jesus in such a personal and direct way at World Youth Day.
“Trust that He is making Himself known to you.”
