Salesians welcome new Rector

Serving in whatever way he can is the hope of Fr John Murphy SDB, the new Rector of the Salesian community here in Tasmania.
With prior roles in teaching, as Director of the Hostel Don Bosco in Brunswick, Novice Master, and Rector of the House of Philosophy, Fr John said this latest appointment came as a surprise due to his age.
Having arrived in January this year, he has in fact already spent three years in Tasmania through his journey with the Salesians, while undergoing practical teaching experience from 1969 to 1971.
This year also happens to be the 50th anniversary of his ordination to priesthood.
Inspired by the Salesian priests and brothers in his schooling years, Fr John felt a call to the priesthood with the Salesian order and was ordained a priest on 24 May 1975.
Being a Salesian is at the core of Fr John’s identity, and his faith, he says, is his greatest treasure.
“I’m very thankful for that. It’s the hidden treasure that’s found. Without it, life would be very empty,” he said.
Fr John said he hopes to contribute to the Salesian community in Glenorchy however he can.
“I’ve always ended up finding a richness in and loving any task I’ve been given.
“The community and the staff at Dominic College are delightful. They can’t be more accommodating, and they’re very sensitive to an old man like me.”
“Hopefully I can bring a certain wealth of experience or knowledge that my last 60 years have taught me, and bring a certain stability,” he said.
