Check out the generous grocery gifts

Launceston Catholic parishioners are among many church and school groups who have demonstrated the spirit of giving this festive season with their generous support for a St Vincent de Paul Society grocery drive.

They were asked to buy a few extra items from a Vinnies’ shopping list to support vulnerable families and people in need.

Launceston parishioners responded by the trolley-full, with further support from parishioners’ kind-hearted family members and friends.

Parish secretary Carolyn Gutteridge, who is a member of the Society’s Our Lady of Perpetual Help Conference in Launceston, said her office had turned into a mini-grocery store filled with ever-growing piles of essential provisions and treats.

She said parishioners and their families had responded with generosity during a cost of living crisis and she hoped the donated items would continue to support vulnerable families and individuals into the New Year

“It’s a massive response, and all items that we asked for, which is great,” Mrs Gutteridge said.

“Some of these items will go to families who may need more assistance in January, when the children are still home from school.”

St Vincent de Paul Society Northern Regional President Rosie Caelli, who is an Apostles Conference member and Launceston parishioner, said the items were a much-needed boost to the society’s supplies.

“Items donated will form part of our pantry where we see our companions come for everyday assistance,” she said.

“Some items will also be put into Christmas hampers.”

Mrs Caelli added that the Society is still seeing around three new people a day who are seeking support.

“It remains vital that we support the vulnerable members of our community,” she said.

“The Society is a constant in the lives of people facing upheaval and instability. The support we offer is personal; they get to speak with someone when they may not have anyone else in their lives.

“It has been an amazing response from the Launceston Catholic Parish to the grocery drive. Thanks to all who donated for their generosity, and their support all year around, not just at Christmas.”
