From Housing to Heart: St Joseph Affordable Homes Earns Statewide Recognition

St Joseph Affordable Homes won several prestigious awards at the 2024 HIA-CSR Tasmanian Housing and Kitchen & Bathroom Awards held on 19 October, in recognition of the company’s commitment to quality-built products and broader community impact.
For the second year running, St Joseph Affordable Homes has won the 2024 Medium Professional Builder/Renovator award at the state level. This award reflects the growth and adaptability of the company, an impressive achievement for a construction social enterprise under five years old. St Joseph Affordable Homes are proud to have been able to continue this success after winning this category at the National HIA Awards earlier this year.
The Specialised Housing category went to two units St Joseph Affordable Homes built for the Hobart Women’s Shelter. These homes were designed with trauma-informed principles to support women and children facing homelessness, creating a calm and secure environment focused on psychological safety. The team worked closely with clients, architects, and consultants, as well as the Hobart Women’s Shelter, to bring this thoughtful design to life.
The Affordable Housing Award was awarded to St Joseph Affordable Homes’ largest project to date. This 55-unit development in Chigwell was a collaboration with CatholicCare Tasmania, Hobart City Mission, and Centacare Evolve Housing. It consists of 45 units designed to the Liveable Housing Australia Silver standard, featuring both single and double-storey homes that prioritize accessibility and adaptability.
Ellie Boxhall, St Joseph Affordable Homes’ Marketing and Communications Officer, was the winner of the HIA Young Achiever/Trailblazer Award. This recognition celebrates the diverse skills and commitment required within the building industry and the pivotal role Ellie plays in the organisation’s success.
Reflecting on the success of the night, Operations Manager Adrian Broomhall expressed his gratitude, saying, “We say a heartfelt thank you to all our staff, board, partners, contractors, suppliers, and stakeholders. Your support is what allows us to see great success while working towards our dual purpose of providing sustainable employment opportunities for young Tasmanians with barriers to employment, and alleviating housing stress and homelessness.” The achievements celebrated at this year’s awards demonstrate St Joseph Affordable Homes’ dedication to its mission and its commitment to building homes for today and foundations for the future.
