Fun, faith and friendships with Young Apostles Society
By Wendy Shaw
A wintry outdoor Mass at spectacular Cradle Mountain was just one of the recent activities of the Young Apostles Society.
The thriving group for university students and young adults sharing faith and friendship has regular gatherings in the north of the state.
The group has been meeting for a number of years, as Mersey Leven Parish Assistant Priest and University of Tasmania Launceston campus Chaplain Fr Chathura Silva explained. Although meetings are in Launceston, the group ventures further afield on social outings.
“Our group is about friendship, companionship and a journey in faith,” he said.
“We are a friendly group from various backgrounds, sharing our faith with each other.
“We did a Cradle Mountain hike the other day and celebrated Mass up there. It was good bonding – just brilliant – and afterwards we went to Devonport and played cards and had dinner at the presbytery.”
The group is for young adults, whether at uni or not, from the north and north west, Fr Chathura said. About 30 members are registered with around 10-20 attending various events, but more are welcome. The group is run with the assistance of Merin Abraham and Aleena Nelson, from Anointing Fire Catholic Ministries.
“The group is for those who want to share the love of Jesus with others around them,” Fr Chathura added.
“It aims to walk with young adults and university students, sharing life with each other through social and faith activities.”
The Young Apostles Society meets on the second and fourth Sundays of the month, after Mass at the Church of the Apostles, Margaret St, Launceston, from 7pm to 8.30pm. This event is run by the uni chaplaincy team.
The group also meets for Mass and programs every Tuesday from 2pm to 6pm at the UTas Inveresk Campus, 2 Invermay Rd, Launceston, Room 214, with Mass at 2.30pm. This is organised by the Young Apostles Society and the uni chaplaincy team.
