A week of ‘walking in the footsteps of others’ at Sacred Heart

The gospel values of walking in the footsteps of others was reinforced during a fundraising and awareness week at Sacred Heart College, New Town.

Students and staff took part in Delany Week, where the spotlight was on the charism values of service and co-operation.

Delany House, one of four houses at the college, is named for Archbishop Patrick Delany, who was Archbishop of Hobart from 1907 to 1926 and a great supporter of the Sisters of St Joseph.

The principal, Elizabeth McDougall, explained the importance of Delany Week to the college by referring to Matthew 25: 35-40: ‘When I was hungry you gave me something to eat… when I needed clothes you clothed me… whatever you did for one of my brothers and sisters you did for me…’

Mrs McDougall added: “Walking in the footsteps of others, and demonstrating empathy for their difficult situation, gives our students the opportunity to be generous and develop a world view beyond their own.”

The week raised both funds – about $1800 to share between Bethlehem House (a 24-hour service centre in Hobart for homeless men, a special work of the St Vincent de Paul Society) and the Society of St Vincent de Paul – and awareness.

Fundraising activities included, in the primary sector: a pyjama day and stalls selling items such as sweet treats, vegetables and hot chocolate; and in the secondary sector: busking sessions (students and staff), double denim day (staff), pizza sales, a fashion parade, and sock stall.

Students and staff also made soup for Loui’s Van (an after-hours mobile service for people in need in the Hobart area), spent a night sleeping in cardboard tents and collected winter clothing items for St Vincent de Paul.
