Parishioners encouraged to ‘invite a friend’ to special Masses of Remembrance

Parishioners were asked invite a friend along to special Masses of Remembrance at Bellerive-Lindisfarne Parish during the weekend of November 18 and 19.

Parish priest Fr Peter O’Loughlin described the Masses as “very moving and very popular”.

“It was for the month of November, to encourage people to come along and to do something to commemorate their special ones,” he said.

November is traditionally a time when the Church prays for the souls of those who have died.

During the Mass, Fr O’Loughlin invited parishioners to remember deceased priests, bishops and religious who had been part of their lives.

There were also prayers and reflections on bereavement including a prayer led by a parent who had lost a child, and a reflection by someone who had lost their spouse.

Anyone who had lost a loved one was invited to place a candle at the base of a crucifix which was displayed for the Mass.

“At the end of Mass I invited anyone who‘d like to come up and take their candle home. Most of them took them home,” Fr O’Loughlin said.

Fr O’Loughlin said the Masses were so successful, the parish will be repeating the weekend next year.

“[It gave] people a practical and meaningful and moving opportunity to do something to remember their loved ones, and a reason for inviting others to come with them,” he said.
