From little things, big things grow.

The Friends of St Mary’s Cathedral is not just a fundraising group, in fact its welcoming arms reach much further than that.

Perhaps best known for its work packaging cards for sale featuring the Cathedral’s beautiful stained glass windows, the group's main aim is to strive to bring people together and connect the parish community outside of mass hours.

“I think something we have to do is to slowly change the culture of people coming to mass and then running out the door,” member Sue Tooth said.

“Our stated purpose is to encourage and foster a greater sense of community and provide opportunities for friendship in our parish.”

The Friends of St Mary’s Cathedral has nine members and has been meeting since June last year.

“The Friends is a small group that, I believe, has not yet realised its potential,” Mrs Tooth said.

“We have a lovely time.”

The group’s monthly meetings are also, at the moment, a working bee for card packaging.

The cards, known as the Our Lady Series, feature eight photographs of the Cathedral’s stained glass windows taken in the 1950s and are sold at the Cathedral, Sacred Heart Church in New Town and also the Combined Charities Christmas Card and Gift Shop, at St David’s Cathedral.

A card of Sacred Heart Church New Town’s nativity window has also been included this year, in time for Christmas.

New group members are always welcome and for more information phone Sue Tooth on 0417 920 129.
