Archbishop Julian Porteous would like to express his great delight in hearing of the news of the appointment of Cardinal Pell by the Holy Father as the Prefect of the new Secretariat for the Economy.
The Archbishop would like to acknowledge the extraordinary contribution Cardinal Pell has made to both the Catholic Church in Australia and more generally to Australian society, in particular in his leadership of the Melbourne and Sydney Archdioceses.
Through his work with the Cardinal, as an auxiliary bishop of Sydney, the Archbishop has witnessed firsthand the dedicated service of the Cardinal in a wide range of areas.
Cardinal Pell will be greatly missed by the Catholic community. It will be a loss for the Church here in Australia, in losing someone of Cardinal Pell’s experience, gifts and talents, leadership ability and above all commitment to Christ.
His appointment by the Holy Father is a great honour for the Church in Australia and the Australian community in general. The appointment by Pope Francis is a recognition of the high esteem in which the Holy Father holds the Cardinal and a recognition of how highly he values his contribution to the universal Church.
The Archbishop, on behalf of the Archdiocese of Hobart, wishes the Cardinal God’s abundant blessing in his new position and offers him their continued prayers and support.
