As the 2017 academic year commences, UTAS welcomes a new intake of students alongside a new Volunteer Youth Leader – Jemille West.

After studying a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Chaplaincy Studies at Notre Dame University in Sydney, Ms West has moved to Tasmania to undertake the role of Volunteer Youth Leader at the UTAS chaplaincy.

“In the role I will be called not to lead but to serve just as our Lord was. I will be working alongside Father Samuel in organising events, outings and talks for the University students.

“What I am truly looking forward to is growing alongside the young people. In giving of myself in service to the UTAS students through events and talks, it will be a blessing to see how they grow in themselves,” said Ms West.

Engagement with students commenced almost immediately with Ms West and the chaplaincy team hosting a successful stall on UTAS ‘Societies Day’ during the university’s Orientation Week. Information was distributed to students regarding the ALPHA program, weekly Mass times, and regular gatherings.

While Ms West had never been to Tasmania before accepting the role at UTAS, the tranquillity of the state has already made an impression.

“With my first time here I loved it! The calm and breathtaking mountains made me feel right at home.”
