This year marks the centenary of the Apparitions of Our Lady to three children Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta at Fatima in Portugal. The messages of Our Lady to the children, particularly the call to pray the Rosary, interceding for world peace, has been embraced by Catholics in the early part of the twentieth century.
Our Lady warned that "If My requests are not granted, Russia will spread its errors throughout the world, raising up wars and persecutions against the Church. The good will be martyred, the Holy Father will suffer much and various nations will be annihilated." But she commented, “If my requests are granted... there will be peace”.
In order to celebrate the centenary of the Apparitions at Fatima, Pope Francis has declared a Jubilee Year, with the inherent plenary indulgence, from 27 November 2016 – 26 November 2017.
The Holy Father will travel to Fatima in May for the centenary anniversary celebrations.
The Confraternity of Christ the Priest will take a Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady to a number of dioceses around Australia, and will come to Tasmania.
An event will be held at St Mary’s Cathedral, Hobart on Saturday 13 May to mark the centenary and will coincide with the papal visit to Fatima.
