Tasmanian Latin Mass Community

The liturgical focus of this welcoming community is Holy Mass celebrated in accordance with the Roman Missal published by Blessed John XXIII in 1962.

In a letter to the bishops of the world accompanying his Apostolic Letter, given Motu proprio, Summorum Pontificum on the use of the Roman liturgy prior to the reforms of 1970, Pope Benedict XVI wrote:

There is no contradiction between the two editions of the Roman Missal.  In the history of the liturgy there is growth and progress, but no rupture.  What earlier generations held as sacred, remains sacred and great for us too, and it cannot be all of a sudden entirely forbidden or even considered harmful. It behooves all of us to preserve the riches which have developed in the Church's faith and prayer, and to give them their proper place.

Since February 1996 there has been a sung Latin Mass on the first Sunday of each month in Tasmania. Recently the Archbishop of Hobart, in response to requests, has given his blessing for more frequent Masses.
